PROCEDURE

You will be greeted by Ms. Thuli Tshabalala at the hotel and then you will first look at Johannesburg from above. Then we drive to a stadium from which you can enjoy a fabulous view of the city skyline. You will learn how Johannesburg came into being and how it has developed into the country’s largest economic metropolis to this day. We take our lunch at the Oriental Plaza, an Indian shopping complex. This is an opportunity to observe our fellow Indian citizens and taste their cuisine. We will visit the city center to get an idea of the city and see important historical buildings like the Diamond Building, the National Library, the Corner House, Anglo-American, Chamber of Mines, etc.We also visit the newly built Maboneng/Arts in the main district. www.maboneng.co.za.

Soweto city tour: More than four million people live in the African suburb. Soweto stands for “South Western Townships”. A visit to this township enables you to get a concrete idea of the reality of our country. On the way through Soweto we pass the Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in Africa. We also attend an African kindergarten. You’ll see the memorial and museum in honor of Hector Pieterson, one of the first children to be killed during the 1976 political unrest. Another highlight of the tour is a visit to the Mandela House Museum. This is where the revolutionary South African President Nelson Mandela lived before his imprisonment on Robben Island.   The last stop in Soweto is one of the many “shebeens”, formerly illegal pubs or restaurants. They were created during apartheid. Since Africans were not allowed to buy or sell alcohol, they did so in the so-called Sheebens, which were also a safe meeting place for political discussions. Here you have your lunch.

MANDELA HOUSE

Mandela House is where Nelson Mandela lived before he was imprisoned for anti-racism activities in 1963. In total, he spent 27 years in prison, before his release in 1990. Mandela was a leading South African activist and politician who spent decades opposing the Apartheid regime. He was the country’s first black president from 1994 to 1999 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. His strong moral conviction and political accomplishments made him a role model for many all over the world. He died in 2013.

SHEEBENS

“Shebeens” were illegal meeting places where the African people of Soweto – who were banned from buying or selling alcohol during the Apartheid regime – used to go to drink and debate political issues in a safe environment. Nowadays, they are more like informal bars and restaurants.

The Johannesburg skyline, with its striking mix of modern skyscrapers and historic architecture, provides a dramatic backdrop to the iconic Market Theatre. Soweto Towers

The Soweto Towers, iconic landmarks in Johannesburg, South Africa, are famous for their vibrant murals and adrenaline-pumping activities like bungee jumping and paintball. Originally part of a power station, the towers now symbolize the spirit and resilience of Soweto's community.

Union Buildings

The Union Buildings in Pretoria serve as the official seat of the South African government. This imposing structure, 275 meters long and shaped in a semi-circle, is symbolically divided into two wings, representing the country’s two official languages, English and Afrikaans. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, the Union Buildings offer sweeping views of the city and were the site of Nelson Mandela’s historic inauguration in 1994, marking a pivotal moment in South Africa’s democracy.
