PROCEDURE PRETORIA
We drive to the center of Pretoria. There you will have the opportunity to visit the Kruger House, the residence of the former President of the South African Republic in 1854. The Kerkplein (English Church Square) is the historic center of Pretoria. In the middle of the square is the statue of former President Paul Kruger. Several historical and architectural landmarks surround Church Square, where the historically significant Rivonia Trial took place in 1963/64. To the northeast of the city center, visit the Union Buildings, the seat of the South African government. The Union Buildings were built by the architect Sir Herbert Baker in the classic style of light sandstone. The building complex was built in 1910 and 1913 and is around 275 meters long. Melrose House, a Victorian building from 1886, was the site of the peace negotiations after the Second Boer War between the British and Boers. The peace treaty between the British and the Boers was signed here on May 31, 1902.
CRADLE OF HUMANKIND: MAROPENG & STERKFONTEIN CAVES
For some years now, South Africa has been known as the cradle of humanity due to its hominid fossil sites. The area covers an area of 25,000 hectares in the “Witwatersrand Basin”, approximately 50 km northwest of Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province. You will also visit this exciting area. Since 2005 there has been a visitor center called Maropeng (Setswana for “return to our place of origin”) near the Sterkfontein Caves. Here Dr. Robert Broom descried the famous “Mrs. Ples “(Plesianthropus transvaalensis). The exterior of the building, which is partly designed as a barrow, offers space for exhibitions, including on the history of the earth, the formation of fossils and evolution. Replicas of all major hominid fossils are also shown.
A great dinner at a Restaurant is included.
(Drinks at one`s own expense)
UNION BUILDINGS
The Union Buildings in Pretoria form the official seat of the South African government. The imposing building complex is 275 metres long and shaped in a semi-circle, with a wing on either side to represent the country’s two official languages, English and Afrikaans.
THE STERKFONTEIN CAVES
The Sterkfontein Caves are a series of karst caves located near the town of Krugersdorp, northwest of Johannesburg. The caves are of particular interest for paleoanthropological research, as a number of fossils from early hominins (members of the human lineage) were found here.
